Movement

The mechanism. Roger W. Smith manufactures movements on the Isle of Man; most British brands use proven Swiss or Japanese calibres.

Assembly

Fitting the movement, dial, hands, crystal, crown, seals and case components into a complete watch. The depth of work can vary substantially.

Regulation

Adjusting a movement’s rate so that it gains or loses less time, normally checked in several positions.

Manufacture

A maker producing meaningful components rather than only specifying or assembling parts made elsewhere.

Ébauche

A base or unfinished movement supplied for another maker to finish, modify or assemble.

Escapement

The mechanism that releases stored energy in controlled increments and keeps the oscillator moving.

Balance wheel

The oscillating regulator in most mechanical wristwatches, performing a role analogous to a pendulum.

Power reserve

How long a mechanical movement runs after being fully wound.

Vitreous enamel

Powdered glass fused to a metal dial blank at high temperature, producing depth and colour but a high failure rate.

Guilloché

A repeating geometric surface pattern cut by engine-turning or produced through stamping or machining.

Chronometer

A watch or movement tested to a defined accuracy standard by an identified process or certification body.

Sub-seconds

A seconds display placed on a smaller subsidiary dial rather than using a central seconds hand.

Hand-wound

A mechanical movement powered by turning the crown rather than by an automatic rotor.

Classification scope

The level to which a decision applies: an entire maker, a collection, one model or a defined production run. Scope prevents one exceptional watch from silently determining every product made by the brand.

Production route

The documented sequence of suppliers, manufacturing operations, assembly, regulation, testing and final release used for a particular watch or group of watches.

Split-tier maker

A maker whose collections or production routes qualify for different tiers. Its headline record shows a range, while each route receives its own decision.

Evidence status

A separate statement of confidence in the supporting material, such as confirmed, provisional, under review or unverified. It is not part of the physical tier and must not be read as a quality score.

Qualifying territory

The geographic territory recognised by the current methodology for qualifying production work. A published decision identifies where each operation occurs rather than relying on a broad origin phrase.

Final quality control

The documented release decision after assembly and testing, including acceptance, correction or rejection. It is more specific than simply looking at the finished watch before dispatch.

What regulation means

Small adjustments, measurable consequences.

A mechanical movement naturally runs at a slightly different rate in different positions. Regulation changes the effective length or inertia of the oscillator so the average daily gain or loss is reduced. Saying who regulated it, where and to what tolerance is useful provenance — not decorative language.
