Provenance is a chain,
not a slogan.

The British Bench editorial classification describes the evidenced physical production route of a watch. It is not a legal determination of country of origin, certification of “British Made” status, or an assessment of compliance with origin, advertising or consumer-protection rules. A tier does not rank quality, value, beauty or prestige; it records which qualifying operations are evidenced within Britain and the wider qualifying territory. Version 0.2 is the framework used across every current maker record in the directory.

Evidence before claims

Current technical pages, workshop descriptions, manuals and direct maker evidence are used where available. Unknown work remains unknown, and maker silence is not treated as negative evidence.

Operations, not adjectives

Movement, case, dial, hands, assembly, timing, regulation, testing and final quality control are recorded separately.

No moral ranking

International manufacture can be outstanding. The tier describes provenance only and is not a product-quality score.

The five-tier framework

Five levels separate identity, design, assembly and manufacture.

Each tier describes a production route. Where routes differ by model, collection or production run, they are assessed separately. A higher tier confers no legal status, certification, approval or endorsement. A lower tier does not mean a less-British company, a worse watch, misconduct or an improper or unlawful origin claim.

Tier IThe British Bench editorial classification — Integrated Manufacture

Integrated Manufacture

The deepest documented level of British watch manufacture across the movement and the finished watch.

British work: Movement manufacture and substantial component production, watch assembly, regulation, testing and final quality control take place within the qualifying territory.
International work: Limited specialist inputs may be sourced internationally, but they do not replace the integrated British manufacturing route.

Tier IIThe British Bench editorial classification — Principal Component Manufacture

Principal Component Manufacture

At least one principal horological component family is materially manufactured within the qualifying territory, followed by complete domestic watch assembly.

British work: A qualifying movement, case, dial, complete hand set or other principal horological component family is materially manufactured within the qualifying territory, and the finished watch undergoes complete assembly, post-casing timing, regulation or controlled rejection, functional testing and final quality control there.
International work: Other principal components may be manufactured abroad and must be identified separately.

Tier IIIThe British Bench editorial classification — British Watch Assembly and Regulation

British Watch Assembly and Regulation

The finished watch is assembled and meaningfully regulated in Britain using internationally manufactured principal components.

British work: Documented watch assembly, timing, corrective regulation, testing and final release procedures take place in Britain.
International work: The movement and most or all principal components are normally manufactured internationally.

Tier IVThe British Bench editorial classification — British Design and Product Development

British Design and Product Development

British teams direct the product, design and engineering while manufacture is principally international.

British work: Product definition, industrial design, engineering, supplier control or technical development is led from Britain.
International work: Component manufacture and usually watch assembly, regulation and final testing take place outside Britain.

Tier VThe British Bench editorial classification — British Brand or Identity

British Brand or Identity

The brand has a credible British identity, but substantive British watchmaking work has not been demonstrated.

British work: British ownership, founding, headquarters, creative direction or brand identity may be established.
International work: Manufacture and assembly are principally international. Where the physical route cannot responsibly be determined, the record is Unverified rather than automatically Tier V.

How a decision is made

The tier is only one part of the record.

01 Scope is established first: maker-wide, collection, model or defined production run.

02 Physical operations are recorded individually rather than inferred from a broad origin claim.

03 Evidence status is shown separately as confirmed, provisional, under review or unverified.

04 Current, paused, discontinued and historical production routes are not treated as interchangeable.

05 Every decision is dated, reviewed and changed when the production route or evidence changes.

Product classification vs maker summary

Classify the watch. Summarise the maker.

01 Tier I–V are physical provenance classifications. They belong to the model, collection, production run or genuinely uniform maker route being evidenced.

02 A simple Tier X maker label is used only when all eligible current regular-production families share that physical tier.

03 Where routes differ, a separate Tier X-led directory summary may be shown only with at least 80% classification coverage, a unique most-common published tier, and at least 70% of the complete current family denominator at that tier or above.

04 Unclassified and Under review current families stay in the denominator. Incomplete research cannot make the maker summary look stronger.

05 Cosmetic variants sharing one evidenced production route count once. Sales volume, price, flagship status and marketing prominence do not change the weighting.

06 If more than one current physical tier is published, the profile also shows the current classified range; unresolved families do not create inferred range endpoints.

Mixed production routes

Different current collections can legitimately occupy different physical tiers. Their route-level classifications stay visible, while a Tier-led maker summary is used only when the published coverage and predominance safeguards are met.

Evidence confidence

A provisional decision can identify the most supportable tier while keeping defined gaps visible. It is not presented as fully confirmed evidence.

Current production first

Current models and current supplier routes take priority over old announcements. Historical achievements remain visible but do not silently determine a current tier.

Public-safe source ledger

Published records show the non-confidential evidence supporting the decision. Correspondence, restricted files and internal editorial notes remain protected.

Maker participation

Right to reply, not a right to veto.

01 Makers may correct factual errors, clarify production routes and submit additional evidence at any time.

02 A maker response is not required where sufficient current evidence already supports a responsible classification.

03 Non-response is not negative evidence and does not by itself lower a tier or create an Unverified outcome.

04 Where an important mandatory detail remains unresolved, the record may stay Provisional, Under review or Unverified according to the evidence actually available.

The full Version 0.2 edition publishes the defined tier criteria, territory, terminology, evidence hierarchy, review procedure and open questions. Correspondence, supplier-confidential material, internal deliberation and restricted evidence remain protected.
